To Obtain a Marriage
License
Both parties must be present with a valid driver’s license and
social security card. If one of the parties does not have a
valid driver’s license, a State Identification Card, certified
copy of a birth certificate or valid passport is acceptable. If
you do not have your social security card or if it has been
lost, please contact the Social Security Administration for a
duplicate card.
Age
Qualifications
As of September 1st 2005 applicants must be over the age of 16 years. If one or more of
the applicants is under the age of 18, they must be accompanied
by their legal guardian.
Fee
The cost for a marriage license is $42.00; we do not accept
personal checks. We accept cash, Visa or MasterCard.
Time Limitations
There is a 72-hour waiting period after the marriage license is
issued. However, in case of emergency this waiting period may be
waived a District Judge.
If the marriage license has not been used within 31 days of
issuance, the license expires and is no longer valid.
Who Can Perform the Ceremony?
A
licensed or ordained minister or priest
A
Jewish rabbi
A
person who is an officer of a religious organization and who is
authorized by the organization
A
Justice of the Peace or a Judge
Where Can the Marriage License Be Used?
A marriage license obtained not only in Johnson County, but in
the State of Texas is valid anywhere in the United States.
However, it is necessary to speak with someone within the County
Clerk’s office in the state in which you wish to be married to
find out their requirements. Some states do not recognize out of
state licenses.
